Our most Frequently Asked Questions.
"What kind of dancing is it?"
A fusion of Latin and old style Jive with
influences from many other dance styles - including more recently West Coast
Swing - Modern Jive is a partner dance which is immensely popular
throughout the UK.
It's a partnership where the Leader (usually the man) leads and the Follower
(usually the lady) follows, and it has
been one of the fastest growing partner dances in the country since the 1980’s.
It is much easier to learn than many other forms of dance, as there is very little in the way of
complicated footwork.
It is a useful dance to learn as it is easy to pick up and can be done at any
social event, including weddings and parties, because you can dance it to almost
any type of music, from 1940's swing to to today’s chart hits.

It’s a a great social night out, and a fun way to keep fit.
"Do I need to bring a partner?"
No, you don't. In Modern Jive you change partners every few minutes, as the
teacher rotates the class. This way, you're not dependent on one person, you
don't pick up their bad habits, you benefit from the more experienced dancers
helping you, and it’s a great way to make new friends.
Everyone is encouraged to dance with each other throughout the evening, and
indeed, the etiquette is that men ask the ladies to dance and the ladies
ask the men.
"What do I need to wear?"
Essentially, whatever you feel comfortable in, but preferably shoes with either a
smooth or leather sole so that you can spin and turn easily, and light
clothing, as you will get very hot.
It’s a good idea to bring a change of top, and a towel - and don’t forget your
deodorant! ;o) When you start to get yourself moving on the dance floor, you are
in for a good work-out, as well!
"Do I have to come every week?"
Modern Jive isn't taught like other dances; there's no set course. Each week you will be taught
3
Beginner moves; the following week, 2 new moves will be taught and one move is
carried forward from the previous week.
There are about 25 Beginners moves in total so if you miss a week, the moves will
be covered again a few weeks later.
We encourage you to focus on the Beginners moves for the first 8-10
weeks or so, in order to get a firm foundation before considering moving to
Intermediate level, but there is no rule as such.
The most important thing is that you're relaxed and having a good time; so you
should move on when you're ready. Remember, it’s not a race, so just go at
your own pace. When you feel that you have got the hang of the Beginners
moves, you can then move up to the Intermediate class.
